Audience feedback to “Arrivals” and “Under Any Other Duties”

(A belated post about this groundbreaking evening of new writing that was performed in January 2014!)

According to the 2012 Census, over 220,000 people living in Northern Ireland weren’t born here. Despite being a significant proportion of population, their stories and faces are rarely seen on NI’s main theatre stages. Arrivals was a 2014 theatre project designed to address this. Terra Nova Productions commissioned five Northern Ireland-based playwrights to work with members of the multicultural communities from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe to create new plays.

“It was clever, funny, poignant and so well acted and just a good night’s entertainment with a very strong message. None of us could look at it and not feel some little pang of guilt for our deep, sometimes so unconscious prejudices.”

“There should be more plays put on of this kind–really give the other perspective–very thought provoking. We would all benefit from more of this theatre!”

Audience feedback about my play, Under Any Other Duties:

“It’s amazing how the piece has stayed with me all day, beautifully observant. Looking forward to the next piece.”

“The evening’s most intriguing offering is Chinese-American Shannon Yee’s ‘Under Any Other Duties’, a disquieting play that offers no easy answers but poses some tantalising questions. The meat of the story hovers beneath the cleanly written plot lines, leaving one longing for this vivid series of snapshots to be developed to its full potential.”–Jane Coyle, Culture NI

“It’s been an honor, real pride and so encouraging working with a playwright of EA [East Asian] descent (there are not many in this industry.)”- Michelle Yim, Arrivals Actor
